What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI assistants and answer engines use it directly when responding to user questions. Where classic SEO competes for a ranking, AEO competes to be the answer.
The formats answer engines prefer
- Question-and-answer structure. A heading that states the question, followed immediately by a complete, self-contained answer in the first sentence or two.
- Concise factual statements. Definitions and claims an engine can lift verbatim without losing accuracy.
- FAQ pages with FAQPage schema. Machine-readable Q&A pairs that map directly to the questions users ask.
- Inverted-pyramid writing. Conclusion first, supporting detail after — engines extract openings far more often than buried conclusions.
AEO vs. GEO
The two overlap heavily. GEO is about making content citable (evidence, statistics, authority); AEO is about making content extractable (structure, directness, schema). Effective AI Search Optimization practices both on every page.
A working example
This page — and the FAQ on our homepage — are AEO in action: question-led headings, direct first-sentence answers, and FAQPage structured data. It's the same structure we build for clients through our AI-Ready Content Strategy service.
