What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of optimizing content so that generative AI engines — systems that compose answers rather than list links — cite and surface it. The term was introduced in a 2023 research paper from Princeton and Georgia Tech, which tested which content changes actually increase visibility in AI-generated answers.
What the research found
The GEO paper benchmarked optimization methods across thousands of queries and found that certain changes measurably increase how often generative engines cite a source, including:
- Adding citations to authoritative sources within your content;
- Adding statistics — concrete, verifiable numbers;
- Adding quotations from credible sources;
- Fluent, clear writing over keyword-stuffed prose.
Notably, traditional keyword optimization performed poorly. Generative engines reward content that reads like evidence, not content that reads like advertising.
